POPSUGAR September Must Have Box

You know it's been a rough week at college when the only highlight is receiving the September Must Have Box from POPSUGAR. I actually forgot that it was in the mail so it was a pleasant surprise and thought it was a perfect way to celebrate the fact that fall is officially here! If you follow me on Instagram (@ruyakiraccc), then you might've seen my unboxing video on Stories but I thought I'd make an in-depth review here as well.

Just in case you haven't heard of the POPSUGAR Must Have Box before, it's basically a subscription box service which sends you items that are in total worth over $100 in value. It's only $39.99 which includes shipping but use the code "SHOP5" to get $5 off your first Must Have Box! There's also the mini version which I haven't tried but it's only $18.95 with shipping included.

Jack & Lucy Bicoastal Wide Brim Hat (Retail: $58)

What's nice is that every box always has a theme and this one clearly screamed fall and fashion week. Two of my favorite things! Right when I opened the box, the first thing that caught my eye was the Jack & Lucy Bicoastal Wide Brim Hat. Sadly it didn't fit on my head (since when do I have a big head?!) but I could totally see this as a great addition to any outfit.

Smith & Cult Lip Lacquer in "The Warning" (Retail: $22)

This is a brand that I've always wanted to try but never had the chance until now and reminds me of what I love about subscription boxes: you always find out more about unique brands! It's a sheer cherry red with gold sparkles in it which sadly didn't look flattering on me but I will say the formula doesn't budge from your lips!

The Gluten Free Bites (Retail $4.99)

What's a subscription box without snacks? True story: I already ate a majority of them by the time I got to shooting these pics and only had three left haha. These are from the brand The Gluten Free Bites and in the flavor Dark Chocolate Coconut which tasted AMAZING. I NEED MORE! I also found out it's really hard to photograph food and still make it look attractive. Props to food bloggers for doing this on a frequent basis!

NCLA MANI-ER Tool Kit (Retail $16)

Next up is the NCLA Mani-er Tool Kit which I think is a great product to have since I'm always doing my nails at home and didn't have any professional tools like this. The cuticle pusher is especially a must!

Flint Lint Roller (Retail: $9.99)

At first when I saw this I thought what the heck is this product?! But it's actually a lint roller from the brand Flint! I love how it's small enough to fit in your purse and take everywhere. Plus sweater weather is almost here which means tons of lint so perfect timing.

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask (Retail $39.99)

Speaking of perfect timing, I actually ran out of deep conditioning mask a couple of weeks ago and was looking for a new one until I saw this in the box and was like woah it's like they know me! haha. This is the Don't Despair, Repair Mask from Briogeo and sadly, I tried it once and didn't see any difference with my hair other than being softer. It wasn't moisturized and didn't get rid of frizz which is qualities that I look for in a mask but it might work for someone else with a different hair texture. My natural hair is curly, thick, color-treated, and damaged so I need something strong!

What do you think of these products? Tried any of them? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Fall Transition

Jacket: J. Crew Factory, check in stores // Dress: Zara // Shoes: Nike Roshe in "Aloha", sold out // Bag: Michael Kors

As strange as this sounds, I adore the summer to fall transition period where it's chilly in the mornings but gets warm towards the afternoon. It's probably because for at least for a few weeks I can pretend that I live on the west coast and can pair jackets with dresses and look totally normal!

I've probably mentioned a thousand times on my blog that I'm a jacket addict and have way too many jackets to count. Of course, I just had to buy one more but can you blame me when it was 40% off at the J. Crew Factory? And it's plum. A perfect addition to my closet for the fall! It doesn't seem to be online anymore but check in stores. I paired it with my Zara dress last seen here and these Nikes that I was raving about on Instagram last month. Sadly they are sold out but there's so many cute Nikes out there so I linked a bunch below. And yes, I totally feel like one of those European fashion bloggers by pairing my dress with some sneakers haha.

Hope everyone has a pain-free Monday!

What to Do If You Hate Your New Hair Color

If you've been following me on Instagram Stories (@ruyakiraccc) then you already know about the hair disaster that I had last weekend. I went into my usual salon which is the third time that I've been to this salon and the first two times that I had my hair done there, the results were amazing. I finally thought I had found the perfect salon in Rochester! Did I mention I've been to 11 salons since I've start dyeing my hair when I was 16? Yes, seriously. It's been a struggle. There's just always something wrong with every salon that I visit and at one point I was going to a new salon every three months. Yet no matter how bad the results turned out, I had never felt miserable about my hair (you can even see my previous hair posts!) and somehow made it work but with this new hair color? NOPE. I can't do it. I don't even wanna look at it cause it's so bad. I'm pretty sure my hair is orange even though I told my stylist to make my balayage a HINT blonder. I don't even have a balayage anymore! It's just bad. Okay, rant over.

So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share with you ladies what to do when you HATE your new hair color and you're trying to find a solution:

Wash Your Hair Immediately - Normally I wouldn't recommend washing your hair right away after getting it dyed and at least waiting 3-4 days so the color settles in. But if you hate your hair? Wash it NOW with a clarifying shampoo such as Head & Shoulders which is something I also would never recommend for color-treated hair since it strips out everything but in this case, use a generous amount!

Make Sure to Wait Before Coloring - I know some people will buy a box of hair dye and color it themselves but make sure to wait at least a week (even better if it's a couple of weeks!) before exposing your hair to color again or else it can result in some major damage. It's more important to wait for your hair to repair itself then to color it. Also I would definitely recommend going to a professional instead of doing it at home just to be safe. Remember it's less damaging to color your hair darker than it is lighter!

Call The Salon - If you're like me then you most likely lied to your hairstylist when she asked "what do you think?!" in that happy voice and smiled and nodded and you said politely that you love it so you wouldn't ruin her day. Oh boy. But it's okay! If it's a salon that you've been going to for a long time then just call and let them know that you didn't like it and they will most likely not charge you for the color correction appointment.

Do Research & Find a New Salon - If you also have the same brain as me, then you most likely won't be going back to that salon after that hair disaster and will be spending your Friday night reading salon reviews on Yelp and wondering what you did in life to receive this kind of misery. It's okay I'm in the same situation as you! Do a LOT of research and even look through the salon's social media to see their work. Yes, it's going to be expensive to fix your hair but hey at least you won't have THAT color on your hair anymore.

Deep Conditioning - In the meantime, make sure to deep condition your hair with a great mask in order to get rid of the some of the damage that's resulted from your previous hair color disaster.

Be Specific and Bring Photos - One of the main reasons why our hair color doesn't come out the way we want it to is because of miscommunication. Take your time and tell them exactly how you want your hair and don't rush! My number one tip is to bring photos since colors like ash blonde means something different to everyone.

Go To a Salon That Does Consultations - Of all the salons that I've been to, not one of them does consultations and I think this is another reason why I'm not satisfied with my hair. I always seem to be rushing when I'm telling my hairstylist what I want and end up forgetting something but with a consultation, you'll be able to sit and go over every detail so you and your hairstylist are on the same page. Of course, it's always the expensive salons that offer consultations so that can be a deal breaker.

Hope these tips helped! I've been wearing a hat every single day to school this week because I don't want anyone to notice how bad my hair is so trust me I feel your pain!

I Heart Roc Interview + Instagram Takeover

Hey everyone! I'm so excited to announce that my interview with I Heart Roc is finally up! Twice in the press this month, what luck! It was an exciting opportunity not only because I've been reading the interviews that I Heart Roc has been doing for a while now but I love their Instagram takeovers! The interview was really about how my perspective on Rochester has changed when I got to college and I wanted many of my photos for the Instagram takeover (which is also live this week!) to reflect that.

This was the first time that I've ever did an Instagram takeover and it was difficult to think about what people would like. I mean there was so many takeovers done already and most of the usual places covered so would people even be interested in seeing what I had to share? The answer is yes: the feedback was wonderful! My best advice for an Instagram takeover is to just go for it and create content that you find interesting and to not be intimated by other people.

There was many places from my childhood that I re-visited including a dead mall so that was interesting haha. But I also talked a lot about the restaurant revival scene, places with history, and of course my favorite places to shoot for the blog! I would love for you gals to check it out and let me know what you think.

A big thank you to the I Heart Roc team for this amazing opportunity!

Labradorite Magic

When it comes to my taste in jewelry, I prefer simple pieces that are meaningful and goes with most of my outfits. I was excited when Labradorite Magic contacted me and asked if I would review one of their pieces because their jewelry is just what I'm looking for - but with a bohemian twist. All of their pieces are made with the Labradorite gem which is so unique (I've never actually heard of the gem before!) and changes color depending on the lighting. Also, they are all silver and has an old vintage feel to it.

I decided to go with the Truthful Eye ring which reminded me of the Turkish evil eye charm which protects you from bad luck. I could stare at this ring all day because it's so pretty and changes from grey to blue and even to black as you can see below! One thing to keep in mind though is that the rings aren't adjustable so make sure that you're 100% sure about your ring size before ordering. Funny enough, despite my ring size being an 8, this ring felt a little tight on my right hand yet not on my left haha.

If you're not a ring fan, then some of my other favorites are the Teary Blue pendant which is a gorgeous deep blue color, the Starlet Studs, and the Luna Eclipse bracelet which is perfect to pair next to a watch.

Make sure to visit labradoritejewelry.com to see more beautiful jewelry!

What's your taste in jewelry like? Do you like bohemian jewelry? Would love to hear your thoughts!

The Feminine Blazer

Blazer: Zara, sold out (similar) // Shorts: J. Crew Factory // Shoes: Espadrilles // Bag: Michael Kors // Watch: Michael Kors

One of my best purchases over the summer was this floral blazer that I got during the summer sale from Zara. If you look closely you can see birds on it! So feminine yet sophisticated and perfect to wear with some jeans for the fall. Unfortunately it's sold out but there's so many great alternatives that I linked below. My favorite is this ASOS one with roses!

Although I do have fall in mind just like everyone else, I'm still sad about packing away my summer clothes. I mean how do you expect me to put away these Soludos espadrilles that I've been practically living in the past couple of months?! And I haven't even begun to think about what I should add to my closet for the fall. Maybe a fall fashion inspiration post should go up on the blog soon? I don't know, I still feel like it's too early haha.

Well in the meantime I'm going to be on a serious hunt for a good salon after the awful experience I've had over the weekend. If you follow me on Instagram (@ruyakiraccc) you probably already saw it on Stories! Ugh. I'll probably wear a hat everyday this week to school since I'm just too frustrated to go out like this. If you live in Rochester and know any good hair salons then please let me know!

In The Press: Democrat & Chronicle Newspaper

Finally I'm able to share with you all the exciting news...I was featured in the Democrat & Chronicle (the main local newspaper here in Rochester) and I talked all about my blog and how I built my brand during college!!! The best part is that I actually pitched the story, myself. Who says you can't be your own PR girl? Two accomplishments in one. Alright, I'll stop bragging now haha. Read the online version of the article here.

I'm not gonna lie, getting my blog some media exposure has been on my mind for a long time. Maybe a year or two. But it just never felt like the right timing until this year when I really started feeling like a professional and secured some incredible collaborations under my belt. The process was a bit of a long one. After taking a Media Relations class last semester and learning how to properly pitch the media, I became determined to finally get some coverage but it's a lot harder than I thought it would be. Even though Rochester is a small city, the media is extremely selective and after a couple of months of research, emailing people back and forth, and sometimes never get any replies back, it finally happened.

Now for the deep stuff (you had to have seen it coming!), it feels strange to see myself in the newspaper when I remember a time where I felt silly for having a fashion blog and feeling embarrassed sharing it with people that I know in real life. I pretty much tried to hide it from everyone except for my best friends! Who would ever take me seriously? Yet somehow over the years, I've stuck to it and along the way started believing in myself and my brand. And maybe that's the most important lesson I've learned through blogging. That's why I encourage you to start believing in yourself and understand that your blog is so much more than a silly hobby. Make that belief so strong that you're not willing to accept criticism, embarrassment, or failure. It's not going to be easy, in my case it took years. But once it happens, it changes everything

#BloggerBoss: How to Beat Blogger Burnout

If you're a blogger then chances are you're a workaholic as well. We tend to juggle so many tasks and roles in order to maintain a successful blog on top of a normal job and if you're a college girl like me, then you're also adding schoolwork to that list. There's nothing wrong with working hard to achieve your goals am I right? Yet no one ever seems to talk about that dreadful feeling of burnout. I'm not talking about being stressed. I'm talking about that feeling of constant mental and physical exhaustion, lack of concentration, being irritable, and even insomnia. Lately I've been feeling it a little more than usual since August was spent doing 8 collaborations (no wonder I'm losing it) along with 2 side projects which I'm glad I was able to achieve but found myself mentally drained from.

That's why I thought it was time to tackle the topic of blog burnout and how to get back to feeling your best self again:

Do Something Exciting - I'm not going to tell you to "relax" because I know that you're a workaholic like me and have a hard time doing that. So instead do something so exciting that it causes you to "wake up" and see things differently again. When you're stuck in a routine, days tend to blur and you become hopeless. By making sure to include some time to do something exciting at least once a week (I know, shocking but it can be done! I recommend Sundays) then you'll feel a whole lot better. Take a day trip by yourself and explore a new town or dye your hair a different color. You would be surprised at one little change can make you feel better.

Go Offline - If you have burnout then you'll most likely start losing motivation to blog as well. The only way I've found to actually start blogging again is to turn off my computer and actually do something that doesn't involve being online at all. No this doesn't mean going on Instagram on your phone instead! Just go offline for an hour or two and get a change of scenery. Grab some coffee and people watch, take a walk at a scenic park, or do some window shopping.

Vent Session With the Squad - My favorite way of getting rid of burnout is heading to my favorite restaurant with my best friend, grabbing a drink, ordering something with tons of carbs, and proceeding to spend the next two hours complaining about our lives. It's so therapeutic especially when your best friend is a workaholic too.

Take Care Of Yourself - Whether it's eating healthy, going to the gym to get all that frustration out, or treating yourself to a spa day, remembering to take care of yourself is a great way to beat burn out. Most people that suffer from burnout (myself included) usually fall into bad habits such as eating too much fast food and then wondering why we're feeling so crappy all the time and resulting in burn out even quicker. Just remember to not overindulge aka buying a new pair of expensive shoes when you already have a million because you deserve to "treat yourself" or is that just me?

There Is No Shame In Saying No - Have you ever heard of the saying "You can do anything but not everything?". I'm slowly beginning to accept the fact that I just can't do everything and that's okay. Learn to say no more often which means having to decline some collaborations or blogging only 2-3 times a week instead of 5. Remember your blog thrives on quality content and how can you post your best content when you're not feeling your best? Trust me, your readers are smarter than you think and the difference shows.

I hope this post was helpful and thanks for reading,

Give Me A Break

Jacket: Zara, sold out online but check in stores // Shorts: J. Crew Factory // Shoes: Soludos // Lips: Mac "Russian Red" Lipstick // Glasses: Gucci (similar) // Watch: Michael Kors // Belt Bracelet: Michael Kors // Bow Bracelet: Kate Spade

I've been meaning to post pictures of this jacket for a long time now since I originally bought it back in early June when I was still vacationing in Istanbul. Of course, things happened and I end up posting it when it's sold out online but that doesn't mean it can't still be in stores! Make sure to take a look at your nearest Zara. I also linked some similar ones down below. As a lover of jackets (seriously I have WAY TOO MANY and have to fight the urge to not buy anymore), seeing bomber jackets come back in style made me so happy especially because I wore it as a kid during the late 90's. I still own a white Mickey Mouse one that I used to wear when I was 4 haha!

What I love about this one is the stretchy material that's lightweight yet keeps you warm on chilly mornings during this summer to fall transition period. Since 90% of the time I'm wearing something casual, it's great to wear with jeans or leggings. Plus how could you not love the saying? Especially now that college is in full force, I could totally use a break *sighs*

Thanks for reading and I hope your Monday is as pain-free as possible!

Trends Talk: All Things Satin

It has been such an exhausting first week back at college and the crazy part it's only been three days! It's just so difficult adjusting back to the routine and chaos of college which resulted in neglecting my blog and social media for the past couple of days. Of course, that doesn't mean I wasn't thinking about fashion. One of my favorite trends for the fall/winter is satin. I remember this trend being popular during the late 90's and early 2000's and I'm glad to see it back. On the top of my list is a gorgeous satin camisole which you can wear under leather jackets or even blazers if you're heading to your internship. I also mentioned the silk baseball hat in my back to school style post and here's a preview of an upcoming outfit post that features it:

The pink champagne color is so pretty, right? I'm actually on the hunt for a maroon one now haha. Hopefully this trend is here to stay cause it just makes any outfit look a little more luxe.

Have an amazing Friday!

Forever In White

Dress: Zara // Shoes: Marshalls, check in stores (similar) // Bag: c/o Louis Vuitton via Bagdujour // Sunglasses: Ray-Ban // Lipstick: c/o Dolce & Gabbana in "Dolce Desire" // Watch: Michael Kors // Bracelet-Chain-Ring: Souvenir from Istanbul (similar)

Hope everyone is having a great Labor day! It still hasn't hit me yet that summer is ending and this is the last time that I'll have four months off from school (shout out to Fisher for giving us four instead of three like other colleges!). It feels surreal knowing that I'm now a senior and doing everything for the last time :( I'm pretty sure I'm going to wear this dress on the first day because it's so comfy, stylish, and who really cares about that "no white after labor day" rule anyways? I've never believed in fashion rules plus I own too much white in my closet. This dress was only $22 and also available in black so get it before it sells out! I decided to switch things up and pair it with these nude ankle boots that I got for the fall and gives the illusion of longer legs which is perfect for a girl like me who's only 5'1.

Lastly, the bag. This is the first time I'm carrying a Louis Vuitton bag and it just feels so special. I love the classic Neverfull design but this one has a twist with the tropical print. The best part is that it comes with a wristlet that has a pink zipper which I use as a wallet. I swear, Louis Vuitton bags are timeless and never gets old and I highly recommend giving Bagdujour a try before investing in a designer bag such as this one. They are a monthly borrowing service that has a wide variety of authentic designer bags such as Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Chanel, etc. You can see my review of this bag here.

Louis Vuitton Monogram Jungle Dots Neverfull

I'm so excited to be sharing with you gals this month's new bag from Bagdujour. Just in case you haven't seen my previous posts about this wonderful service, Bagdujour is a designer bag borrowing service which allows you to borrow authentic bags every month and has a large variety of designers to choose from such as Saint Laurent, Chanel, Balenciaga, etc. They were kind enough to send me this Louis Vuitton Monogram Jungle Dots Neverfull which has their timeless logo all over it while still remaining modern and unique with it's red dots and pink tropical print. Ever since I got it, I've received so many compliments and I'm pretty sure it's because no one has seen a Louis Vuitton bag in this design before and neither have I! Is it flashy? Sure. But if you're like me and have a closet filled with solids and basics then I'm sure you can switch things up a little bit.

The leather is silky smooth (but then again what else do you expect from such a prestigious brand?) and I fell in love with the interior which is striped and blush pink with the brand written inside of it in cursive. Even though this is a bag borrowing service, the bags are in like-new condition and there are no stains or signs of damage to worry about.
I was surprised to find that it also comes with a wristlet with a blush pink zipper which I've been using as a wallet. It's almost like receiving two bags since you can totally use the wristlet separately since it perfectly fits all of your essentials such as cards, car keys, and your phone.
I'm just so impressed with this service and can't wait to borrow more bags from them! I just haven't been disappointed with anything and even the shipping is super quick. Just in case you're looking to buy a bag instead of borrowing, Bagdujour has a large selection of bags for sale as well so make sure to take a look.

A Fashionista's Essentials For College With Scotchgard

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and it's advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #ProtectYourEverything #CollectiveBias

When it comes to college, there's just some things a fashionista like me can't live without. Sadly, you can't fit your entire wardrobe in a small cramped dorm room so you have to cut down on a lot of things and only bring what's necessary. Since I know most of you gals are already back in college or waiting for college to start in the upcoming weeks, I thought this would be a great time to share some of my fashion-related essentials. Here they are:

Sneakers

I'll admit, the only time that I wear sneakers was to the gym and nowhere else. It just never went with my outfits! But that was in the past. I just invested in a stylish pair that totally goes with the athleisure trend that's all over the place right now and think these ones will go perfectly with yoga pants or even with dresses! Plus they don't hurt my feet as I'm walking up and down stairs and around campus all day.

Hats

We all have bad hair days or just days where we don't have time to wash our hair and dry shampoo just isn't cutting it. I have so many baseball hats and knit berets in my closet for days like this that actually looks stylish with so many outfits! Right now I'm loving this pink champagne one that goes with the silk trend that's so popular right now.

Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Protector

I actually just found out about this product and I'm already obsessed with it especially because I'm so clumsy! Scotchgard is a great way to protect important and expensive clothes and even furniture. It blocks liquids and stains and is safe to use on a large variety of fabrics such as cotton, polyester, silk, and wool. I've been using it on throw pillows, dress pants (cause I always spill something at lunch and of course would have to make a presentation later), hats, and even backpacks! Just make sure to avoid leather materials. The options are endless and can really make your life easier. Especially when you're living with your dorm mate who always has to borrow your clothes and you're scared she's going to ruin them. We've all been there right? Here are more ways to use Scotchgard and make sure to use this $2.00 off coupon when you're picking it up at Target.

Yoga Pants

Now regardless if you go to yoga classes or not (although I highly recommend you go cause it's a great way to deal with college stress!), every college girl needs a stylish pair of yoga pants in her closet. I usually wear them on days where I don't feel like dressing up and need something to throw on when I don't have a lot of time to get ready. Plus I always get compliments on these cut out ones that you'll see in an upcoming outfit post soon!

Leather Jackets

A leather jacket can easily upgrade any outfit and make it look more sleek and put-together. Yes, even with yoga pants! It's especially great during that in-between summer and fall weather where it's chilly in the mornings and humid in the afternoons.

Thanks for reading and good luck with school!
