Casual Fall

Top: Forever 21, sold out (similar) // Jeans: Hollister // Bag: Rebecca Minkoff // Shoes: Marshalls, old (similar) // Lipstick: Mac "Velvet Teddy" // Lip Liner: Mac "Spice" // Watch: Michael Kors // Bracelet: Michael Kors

Happy Friday ladies! These photos were shot a couple weeks ago back when I had long hair and wow. Just wow. What a difference! I highly recommend cutting your hair (and getting the Lob which is perfect for college girls) if it looks as damaged as myn in these pictures. Your hair will look instantly healthier I promise you!

As for the outfit, this is perfect if you're experiencing some warm fall weather or just live in a warm climate but want to wear some fall colors (lucky!). I usually don't wear a lot of florals or patterns for that matter, but the colors in this one was just gorgeous. Also, I've been trying darker colored lipsticks and have yet to find a good burgundy lipstick so if you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them.
As for what's been going on in my life lately, I'm heading to work in a few hours (working 2 jobs in one day sucks) but hopefully later I'll be able to go out for dinner with one of my besties. Then on Saturday, I'll be attending Upstate Social Sessions which is the first social media conference in Rochester. About time! I'll be sure to blog about the whole experience and let you know what I think!

The Effortless Long Bob

Hey ladies! For a month now, I've been going through this phase where I hate everything. Including my hair which was looking ridiculous by the way. Although I've pretty much done everything to my hair the past couple years (bronde, blue and pink, balayage are the most recent), I decided it was time to cut it. First of all, I've been dyeing my hair for years now and the amount of damage it's accumulated is awful and it really seemed to show after I did the balayage. Second, I was bored of my hair but didn't want to do anything dramatic like a short bob (been there, done that. Didn't look great on my round face!). A long bob (or lob for short) seemed to be the perfect look that would give me a fresh, modern look but also doesn't take much time to straighten in the mornings! Seriously, it only takes 15 minutes to blow dry my naturally curly hair straight which feels like a miracle haha.

If you want to get the same look, just tell your hairstylist to cut your hair until it's a little bit past your shoulders. Here's some reference pictures that I used (found on Pinterest, of course):

I'm obsessed with the results and I highly recommend taking a couple inches off your hair if it's damaged! My hair looked healthier instantly and the length wasn't a big change so I felt confident right after the appointment. I can't wait to see how it looks when it's curled! It's amazing how a great haircut can brighten your mood and make you feel better about yourself. I just feel like a new person! It's like having a weight lifted off your shoulders (literally, haha).

Have a great weekend lovelies,

Girl On the Go Essential: Dove Dry Spray Giveaway

As a college girl, I live a fast-paced life. From rushing back and forth in between classes to attending board meetings for my internship, looking presentable at all times can be difficult. That's why I try to shorten my beauty routine in the mornings to include only the essentials. One of the most important part of my routine is making sure I'm fresh by using deodorant which I'm positive is a part of your routine as well. The only thing that I've always hated about deodorant is that some of them won't last throughout the day and will leave white marks on your shirt! Feel like wearing black? You're not anymore, ugh.

But then Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant came along and pretty much saved me from having to change my clothes a million times. This was my first time trying spray deodorant and let me tell you...I have been missing out for so long! All you have to do is shake the can, spray (hold at least 6 inches away from your arm), and that's it! It goes on dry and doesn't feel sticky (my pet peeve) while providing 48 hour odor and wetness protection. They also come in 6 different scents including one that is unscented for sensitive skin types.

The best part is Dove was kind enough to offer my readers two full-size bottles for a giveaway! The two scents are "Nourished Beauty" and "Revive". "Nourished Beauty" is what I like to call the classic Dove scent which is clean, powdery and has hints of jasmine and rose. For gals who like something a bit more citrus, "Revive" smells like pomegranate and lemon which is my personal favorite. One winner will be lucky enough to receive them both!

The giveaway ends next Tuesday, November 3rd so enter before it's too late!

UniversiTee College Subscription Box

I've always been very "ehh" about subscription boxes. The thought of getting random stuff delivered to my home every month isn't very exciting to me. It's probably because I'm pretty sure I won't like 90% of the stuff that's in the box and is it really worth the money to pay for stuff that you won't even use? You know us college girls have to save our money! Yet when I got the chance to review UniversiTee box, I was curious. A subscription box aimed towards empowering college girls? You know I'm all about empowerment and motivation! So I decided to give it a try and I it!

Every month UniversiTee box has a different theme and this month it was the "Party" theme which celebrates the beginning of a new school year. The box includes a t-shirt that says "I only throw pretty parties", necklace (so gorgeous!), 3 notebooks, a pin that says Party Queen, and 2 stickers with quotes on them. I loved how everything matched with the color scheme being gold, black, and white and the box itself was so pretty! It came in an aqua blue box and once you open it, it's wrapped in hot pink paper that you can totally re-use (or am I the only person who does that? haha).

Most subscription boxes don't actually contain an article of clothing so I was pleasantly surprised about that while the necklace was my favorite piece. I've actually wore it in an outfit post which I'll post on the blog soon. I also adored the three mini notebooks which comes in useful since I always have blog ideas to write down and they easily fit into my purse even if I'm wearing a crossbody! Overall, I'm happy that I discovered this subscription box and even more glad that it comes with so many useful things.

If you'd like to try UniversiTee box, feel free to use the code Ruya50 to get 50% off your first box at!

Why You Should Be Proud to Have a Name That People Can't Pronounce

Roo-yah. Ri-ya. Ray-a. Ryan. I've pretty much heard my name butchered in every single way. Ever since I've gone to school (which is like, my whole life) I've heard almost everyone pronounce my name wrong. Some people react politely and say "That's a beautiful name!" (shout out to those people, you make me have faith in humanity again) while others not so kindly. Many times it seems to be my professors who are saying things like "Wow your parents screwed you up for life" or the classic "Did your parents spell your name wrong?". Sounds like a great way to start the first day of school am I right? I just love attendance.
Yes, I have a unique name. Yes, it may take you "a while" to remember it. Yes, I need to correct you if you say it wrong (I've actually heard people say I'm "bitchy" because I correct them ha!). It's my name

You see, I always believed that there is one thing that we are born with and die with and that's our name. It follows you all throughout life and even if you do change it, there's still a part of you that remembers your original name. There is so much power behind it. Think of how long it must've taken your parents to choose a name for you. They didn't just come up with it out of the blue, there was thought put into it. I come from a Turkish family and my parents wanted to give me a Turkish name despite knowing that I would be born and raised in America. They wanted me to always have a direct connection to my culture. By not remembering my name or pronouncing it incorrectly, it's almost like an insult! It's almost as if people are saying "I don't care how your name is pronounced because you're not important". It's embarrassing, depressing, and a constant battle that I have to go through my entire life.

I know I'm not the only one who goes through this and it may not seem like an important topic, but we need to start appreciating people's names more. It's their identity, personality, past, present, and future all wrapped up into one. A few weeks ago, I realized that this situation had finally gotten to me when I realized that I had introduced myself to someone and right after telling them my name...I apologized for it. I did it without even realizing it. Later on did I realize how sad it is to apologize for your own name. It's as if my name is an inconvenience for people.

Don't be the person that apologizes. Don't be the person that's nervous every time attendance starts. Most of all, don't be the person that's ashamed of their name. Proudly tell people your name, loud and clear so it gets through that you're important, just like everyone else. Besides, a unique name is more memorable. Why would you want to be like everyone else anyways?

The Oversized Coat

Coat: c/o Santa Fe Apparel // Shoes: Nine West, old (similar) // Sunglasses: H&M, old (similar) // Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs // Ring: J. Crew, old (similar)

One of the trends that I always loved to see during the fall/winter is oversized coats. I'll admit, I've always been intimidated by anything "oversized". When you're short and petite, you naturally look for things that are more fitted and make you appear taller. Anything big and you suddenly have the fear of looking like you're just drowning in fabric! I've struggled with this concept for years cause it's just so hard to find outerwear that looks normal on a short person. Yet when I saw this wool coat online at Santa Fe Apparel, I took the chance and was pleasantly surprised at how flattering it was! I'm pretty sure it's because of the A-line silhouette and let's just talk about the adorable black buttons: it's so retro yet stylish! This is the perfect coat for any college fashionista who wants to stay warm while walking through campus yet doesn't want to wear another one of those ugly puffy coats. If you're looking for more stylish coats, Santa Fe Apparel was kind enough to give my readers 20% off their purchase with the code: SSAS20

Let me know if you find something you like! What do you think about oversized coats?

Flower Child

Dress: c/o Florence & Laverne // Boots: Marshalls, old (similar) // Necklace: BCBGeneration, old (similar) // Flower Crown: made by my lovely photographer, Kate! (similar) Lipstick: YSL Rouge Pur Couture in "Rose Stiletto" // Extensions: Bellami Balayage by Guy Tang in "Ash Brown/Ash Blonde"

I'm so excited to finally be able to share these photos which I shot earlier this month with Kate, who is a lovely, local photographer in Rochester, NY who found me through Instagram (don't you just love technology?). I was so excited when she asked if I could model for her and knew that it would be the perfect opportunity to wear my new Florence & Laverne dress that I got in the mail. It's pink, it's lace, and it's perfect to dress both up and down. Did I mention I already wore it for three occasions since I got it? It's just such a flattering dress! When it was time for the shoot, I was a bit nervous but Kate made me feel so comfortable in front of the camera! I highly recommend her if you're looking for a photographer in the Rochester area that's actually going to catch your personality on camera.

Kate and I decided that we would go for a bohemian look with the flower crown that she made and the final touch was the balayage extensions. You can't be a flower child without some outrageously long hair! I usually only wear my extensions for special occasions (too much work for everyday!) but I just knew that this shoot would be worth the extra time that I would spend on my hair haha. It was such a fun day and it made me realize how much I love blogging and how fortunate I am to get opportunities to work with such talented people! And how could I forget you guys?! Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and making Sweet, Short & Stylish a reality. Every view and every comment means so much to me

Mad For Plaid With LISTERINE®

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and it's advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.
#RinseMadeRad #CollectiveBias
I've always loved fall and all the trends that come back around this time of year. One of my favorite trends is of course plaid! From home decor to clothes, it's the perfect way to celebrate fall. Currently I'm incorporating plaid into my wardrobe with blanket scarves, plaid button-downs and coats! Here are a few examples:

Recently I discovered that LISTERINE® has partnered up with Target for their Mad for Plaid collection and have created limited edition bottles that are...yes you guessed it, plaid! This is the perfect way to get your bathroom to look more stylish for the fall and also to help you achieve better oral health. LISTERINE® has always been my go-to brand for mouthwash and it's no wonder since it's the world's number-one dentist recommended brand! Remember: brushing alone isn't enough so floss daily and rinse twice a day with a bacteria killing mouthwash like LISTERINE®.

The plaid bottles are available until October 31st at Target stores and currently 10% off so make sure to get it before it's sold out!

Have you tried LISTERINE®'s new collection? What's your favorite bottle design? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Influenster x YSL Rouge Pur Couture Voxbox

You know it's a good day when you receive a Influenster voxbox in the mail but to say that I was surprised to receive another YSL voxbox is an understatement. What are the chances!? This time around it's not one but two lipsticks from their new Rouge Pur Couture collection. Best mail day ever. Feel free to sign up at Influenster and connect your Facebook account so you can get free products like this yourself, no need to be a blogger!

As always, I fell in love with the beautiful packaging and couldn't wait to see what shades they were. The two shades are called Fuchsia and Rose Stiletto and what's different about this collection is that the lipsticks have the YSL logo carved into the actual lipstick. I love little details like that, it just makes it look so much more luxurious.

First up is Fuchsia which is a cool-toned bright pink that has a semi-matte finish. It's the kind of lipstick that you put on when you're feeling sad and want to cheer up. Personally, I've never worn such a bright pink before, I prefer more muted, neutral colors but I gave it a try and...didn't really like the shade on me haha. Maybe I'm just not used to such a bright color but I didn't think it was flattering on my skin tone which is pale and has yellow undertones. Plus it didn't help that I was wearing a maroon shirt which totally clashes!

While Rose Stiletto on the other hand was love at first sight. Now that's my kind of lipstick! I always gravitate towards anything rose, neutral and matte. Although this is darker than most rose shade lipsticks I own, I think it's perfect for fall and actually wore it to a shoot which I'll be posting on the blog later this week. And yes I'm wearing extensions in this photo which I'll also be talking about later haha.

What I noticed about both lipsticks is how creamy they are and how smoothly it goes on your lips! They also aren't drying and don't fade away as quickly as most lipsticks do. The best part is that they're super pigmented and a little goes a long way. No need to re-apply! YSL does it again.

Have you tried YSL lipsticks before? What do you think about the brand? Let me know!

Preppy in Plaid

Shirt: Nordstrom Rack (similar) // Skirt: BCBG Maxazria, check in stores (similar) (similar) // Necklace: c/o Happiness Boutique // Shoes: Nine West (similar) (similar) // Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs // Watch: Michael Kors // Bracelet: Michael Kors // Sunglasses: H&M, old (similar)

It was just one of those beautiful fall days so I decided to dress up in one of my favorite combinations: plaid and leather. The combination is both whimsical and chic and can we just talk about this leather skirt? I've never seen a leather skirt with scallop edges! I've been trying to stop buying dresses and skirts since winter is coming but I just couldn't resist this one. I could totally see myself wearing this in the summer too with a t-shirt and flats for a casual look.

The star of this outfit is of course the mint green necklace that I'm wearing from the Happiness Boutique. A great statement necklace always enhances any outfit and I've already worn this one three times this week! From t-shirt and jeans to more fancy outfits like this one, it just goes with everything and is so lightweight. They have so many other great pieces as well so I highly recommend checking out the boutique if you're looking for some new jewelry!
